Client Background
O.R. Trax is a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based platform that streamlines communication between surgical facilities and medical device vendor representatives. It automates vendor credentialing and provides real-time, PHI-free surgical schedule updates, reducing OR delays and enhancing compliance. It acts as a digital bridge for managing vendor visits and scheduling.
As O.R. Trax's client base grew, so did need for modern infrastructure. A platform outage wouldn't just mean a service disruption — it could cause delayed or lost clinical data with real consequences for patient care.
The Challenge
O.R. Trax's integration platform ran on a single cloud instance — a setup that had served them in earlier stages but was no longer appropriate for the scale and criticality of their operations. Cloud Life Consulting was engaged to assess the architecture and recommend a path forward.
What We Found
• No automated recovery if the instance failed
• Credentials stored in config files, creating security and audit risk
• No centralized logging or alerting for the operations team
• Architecture that couldn't scale without significant manual effort
What Ortrax Needed
• High availability with automatic failover — no manual intervention
• A secure, auditable approach to credential management
• Full observability into platform health and message processing
• A migration path with minimal disruption to live clinical integrations
• A foundation that could grow with their business
Our Approach: AWS ECS Fargate Migration
Cloud Life Consulting designed and delivered a migration from the legacy single-instance deployment to a fully managed, containerized architecture on Amazon ECS Fargate. The new platform runs multiple active instances of Mirth Connect simultaneously — meaning if any single instance fails, the others continue processing messages without interruption and without any manual action required.
Why ECS Fargate?
ECS Fargate removes the burden of managing servers entirely. Ortrax's team can focus on their integration platform and their clients — not on patching, scaling, or recovering infrastructure. Fargate automatically replaces failed containers, integrates natively with AWS networking and security services, and provides a consistent, repeatable deployment model.
Critically, ECS Fargate fit O.R. Trax's needs for a fixed, predictable active-active configuration - multiple simultaneous instances sharing state, all behind a Network Load Balancer that routes HL7 traffic intelligently and keeps long-lived clinical connections stable.
The Migration: Zero Surprises
One of O.R. Trax's core requirements was protecting their clients from any disruption during the migration. Our four-phase approach kept the existing environment fully operational until the new platform was validated and ready — with a clear rollback path at every stage.
Results
The engagement delivered measurable, lasting improvements to O.R. Trax's platform reliability, security, and operational capability.
- High availability achieved: Multiple active containers mean no single failure can interrupt message processing. ECS automatically replaces unhealthy containers — no on-call action required.
- Credentials secured: All sensitive credentials removed from configuration files and stored in AWS Secrets Manager with full audit logging and rotation capability.
- Complete observability: CloudWatch dashboards and alarms give the O.R. Trax team real-time visibility into platform health, message throughput, and resource utilization for the first time.
- Scalable foundation: The ECS architecture is ready to scale as O.R. Trax grows — without rebuilding the platform or accepting additional operational risk.
- Clinical continuity protected: Zero disruption to any connected clinical organization during or after the migration.
Why Cloud Life Consulting
